چکیده

Tsunami wave generation by submarine landslides of a variable volume in a basin of variable depth is studied within the shallow-water theory. The problem of landslide induced tsunami wave generation and propagation is studied analytically for two specific convex bottom profiles (h∼ x4/3 and h∼ x4). In these cases the basic equations can be reduced to the constant-coefficient wave equation with the forcing determined by the landslide motion. For certain conditions on the landslide characteristics (speed and volume per unit cross-section) the wave field can be described explicitly. It is represented by one forced wave propagating with the speed of the landslide and following its offshore direction, and two free waves propagating in opposite directions with the wave celerity. For the case of a near-resonant motion of the landslide along the power bottom profile h∼ x the dynamics of the waves propagating offshore is studied using the asymptotic approach. If the landslide is moving in the fully resonant regime the explicit formula for the amplitude of the wave can be derived. It is demonstrated that generally tsunami wave amplitude varies non-monotonically with distance.

Nonlinear mechanism of tsunami wave generation by atmospheric disturbances

The problem of tsunami wave generation by variable meteo-conditions is discussed. The simplified linear and nonlinear shallow water models are derived, and their analytical solutions for a basin of constant depth are discussed. The shallow-water model describes well the properties of the generated tsunami waves for all regimes, except the resonance case. The nonlinear-dispersive model based on ...

Some Aspects of Energy Balance and Tsunami Generation by Earthquakes and Landslides

Tsunamis are generated by displacement or motion of large volumes of water. While there are several documented cases of tsunami generation by volcanic eruptions and landslides, most observed tsunamis are attributed to earthquakes. Kinematic models of tsunami generation by earthquakes — where specified fault size and slip determine seafloor and sea-surface vertical motion — quantitatively explai...

Central-Upwind Scheme for Savage-Hutter Type Model of Submarine Landslides and Generated Tsunami Waves

We develop a new central-upwind scheme for a one-dimensional Savage-Hutter type model of submarine landslides and generated tsunami waves. Our scheme exactly preserves physically relevant steady-states, preserves positivity of water depth, is insensitive to choice of discretization of nonconservative products, and properly incorporates friction inherent in the model. We apply our scheme to a va...

Numerical modeling of the 1964 Alaska tsunami in western Passage Canal and Whittier, Alaska

A numerical model of the wave dynamics in Passage Canal, Alaska during the Mw 9.2 megathrust earthquake is presented. During the earthquake, several types of waves were identified at the city of Whittier, located at the head of Passage Canal. The first wave is thought to have been a seiche, while the other two waves were probably triggered by submarine landslides. We model the seiche wave, land...

Submarine landslides along the Malacca Strait‐Mergui Basin shelf margin: Insights from sequence‐stratigraphic analysis

[1] The enormously destructive tsunami of December 2004, caused by sudden motion of the Sunda megathrust beneath the Indian Ocean, raised concerns about tectonically induced tsunami worldwide. Submarine landslides may also trigger dangerous tsunami. However, the potential and repeat time for such events is in most places poorly known due to inadequate exploration of the sea floor and age constr...
